What is right with Taylor Swift?

If there’s one thing that positive psychology teaches us, it’s the value of focusing on what’s right with people. This concept gives me the perfect opportunity to dive into a topic I’m incredibly passionate about—Taylor Swift. Yes, I know, cue the eye rolls from my husband and friends. But after attending her spectacular Eras Tour recently, I’m more convinced than ever that Taylor embodies so much of what is right in the world.

As a seasoned observer of people—both in my profession and everyday life—the Eras Tour was a remarkable microcosm of positivity and connection. It was impossible not to be moved by what I saw, and I’m excited to share some of those observations with you.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

One of my top VIA strengths is the appreciation of beauty and excellence, and Taylor Swift is a shining example of this. The more I attune myself to beauty and excellence, the more it fuels my creativity and enhances my mental wellbeing. The Eras Tour was a feast for the senses—the intricate sets, stunning costumes, skilled dancers, and dazzling fireworks were overwhelming in their beauty. Everything about that day was designed to take your breath away, and it certainly did for me.

But what truly sets Taylor apart is her excellence. Her songwriting captures the thoughts, emotions, and experiences of millions, distilling them into lyrics that resonate deeply with so many. Taylor has an uncanny ability to articulate feelings that most of us struggle to put into words. Her music has evolved over the decades, experimenting with different styles without ever losing its quality. I became a fan later in life, during the lockdown, when I discovered Folklore. That album was my companion during those trying times, and it led me down a path of discovering a rich library of music that I’m still exploring today. As an “old” Swiftie, I’m grateful to have finally found her music, even if I didn’t grow up with it.

Work Ethic

The Eras Tour is a testament to Taylor’s incredible work ethic. Beginning in March 2023 and running through December 2024, the tour spans 149 shows across five continents. Taylor is on stage for a staggering 3 hours and 20 minutes without a break. As a role model, she not only writes her own music but also plays a significant role in her marketing and management—a rare feat in the music industry. Her dedication and hard work are inspiring, especially to women who look up to her as an example of what can be achieved through perseverance and passion.

Authenticity and Living Her Values

Taylor’s journey is one of growth and self-discovery. In the early stages of her career, she conformed to the expectations placed on women—people-pleasing and maintaining a “good girl” image. However, as she grew both personally and professionally, she realized that staying true to her values was more important than appeasing others. Against the advice of her team, Taylor began to speak out about politics and diversity, injecting more honesty into her music and embracing her true self. This shift not only made her music more authentic but also made her a stronger role model for fans who admire her courage to live her values openly.

Building Community

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Eras Tour was witnessing the sense of community Taylor has built. The stadium was filled with young girls dancing with their families, joyfully exchanging Taylor-themed friendship bracelets. This simple act sparked conversations between strangers, creating connections that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. Despite the enormous crowd of 92,000 people, the atmosphere was one of safety, love, and mutual respect. I’ve never experienced a crowded space that felt so nurturing, and it was a testament to the positive environment Taylor cultivates among her fans.

Enabling Emotional Expression

As an empath, I was deeply moved by the release of emotions I witnessed during the concert. People sang, screamed, and shouted out their feelings, channelling their personal stories through Taylor’s music. There were tears as memories of past hardships and old relationships surfaced, mingling with Taylor’s storytelling in a way that felt cathartic and healing. Watching this unfold, I couldn’t help but wish I had grown up in the Swiftie era, where such emotional expression and connection are celebrated.

In a world that often feels divided and disconnected, Taylor Swift is a beacon of what’s right. She reminds us of the power of beauty, excellence, hard work, authenticity, community, and emotional expression. Whether you’re a fan or not, there’s something to admire in how she brings people together and creates spaces for joy, healing, and connection. And for that, I’ll continue to champion all that is right with Taylor Swift.
